The Better Life. Spirits of Vanuatu

Künstlerhaus, Wien (Germany) 2017
Installation: photography, video, watercolor paintings on papyrus, sand drawings, colored sand drawings – inspired by a travel to Vanuatu May/June 2013

Vanuatu. The Melanesian island group in the South Pacific hold an exceptional primacy: according to the “Happy Planet Index” published by the London think tank New Economic Foundation (NEF 2007), the happiest people in the world live there. The NEF evaluated 178 national states in the fields of economy, environment and social issues on the basis of the parameters of consumption, life expectancy and happiness.

In 2013, I visited Vanuatu, the islands Efate and Tanna, to find out what makes the almost 250,000 inhabitants of these 83 islands so happy.

Vanuatu is also the smallest parliamentary republic represented in the United Nations. As easy as life on Vanuatu islands is – according to western standards we would describe them as poor – people are satiesfied and cheerful.  My installation is a call for more Vanuatus in this world!

For a conscious, respectful and careful handling of the natural resources – which are the good of all human beings. And for more islands of humanity and peace.
